You’ve probably heard the recent media reports about the link between textured breast implants and a very rare type of lymphoma called Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). In July 2019, Allergan issued a voluntary recall of Biocell-coated textured implants and tissue expanders.
BIA-ALCL is not breast cancer. It is a very rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that can develop around implants. To date, there have been no confirmed cases of lymphoma in patients with smooth-shell breast implants, which are the vast majority of patients.
Because of the low risk of developing this type of lymphoma, the FDA is NOT recommending removal of these implants if the patient is not experiencing symptoms. The most common symptoms are swelling or fluid collection around the implant after it has healed, although pain, a palpable lump in the breast or armpit, fever, weight loss, or changes in the shape of the breast that are often on one side, creating asymmetry, may also occur.
There are currently no cases of BIA-ALCL in Puerto Rico. If you have any of these symptoms, I ask that you contact our office. I will examine you and, if necessary, send you for diagnostic tests to help us determine the reason for your symptoms. Remember that your health and safety come first.
The vast majority of patients who have developed this condition are cured by simply removing the implant and the collagen capsule surrounding it. Some patients have required chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy as additional treatment.
The American Society of Plastic Surgery website offers a very good source of information that is constantly updated on BIA-ALCL ( PlasticSurgery.org/ALCL ). Of course, count on me to personally evaluate you if you have any questions on the subject. I also remind you to continue your routine follow-up, at least once a year, with us.
I really appreciate the trust you have placed in me for your treatment, and as you well know, I like to keep you informed of unusual developments regarding your treatment and surgeries. Please know that I will continue to review all information that arises from day to day regarding this matter and will keep you informed as new information emerges.
